As the autumn exchange program drew to an end, SAIF exchange students at University of California, Davis and University of Washington came together in December for a tour to the best-known US companies as a finale of the exchange stay in the US.

The tour at Google was guided by Mr. Yu Zhou from the Strategy Department, who introduced the business, culture and social responsibilities of Google. The students had the chance to get their hands on the one-person-tall Android Phone, and experienced Google Map, Google Doodles and the freshly unleashed Android 4.0 operating system, or nicknamed Ice Cream Sandwich.

Walking in the enormous premise of Google, the students were impressed by the corporate culture demonstrated by its infrastructure: over 30 restaurants offering global cuisine, 5 gyms, several swimming pools and numerous gardens. Google Staff were constantly seen wandering in the garden or swimming in the pool. It, however, does not mean the work at Google is an easy one; instead, these seemingly laid-back employees are exactly those who challenge missions impossible.

The second stop of the company visit is Microsoft, another software giant. At the visitor center of Microsoft, the students tried out a latest array of Microsoft products and toured around the exhibition that introduced the company’s milestones and some personal items of Bill Gates. At Microsoft, every staff member has their own office where they are given full privacy. And photos of each individual can be seen on the wall of the aisle---it is more like a home than a workplace.

Is it because of the competent employees who produce great profits which in turn give back to the employee welfare or the other way round? What can we learn from the management style of these giants? The company visits have given SAIF students much food for thought.
